By a Promise, We Flow

Lately, I’ve been sitting in Galatians.

One verse has continued to echo in my heart:

“God gave it to Abraham by a promise.” — Galatians 3:18

Paul is reminding us that our inheritance came through a promise— not through the Law.

A promise is fundamentally one-directional.

It rests on the character of the one making it—not on the performance of the one receiving it.

Unlike a contract, it isn’t based on two people keeping their end of the bargain.

It is rooted in the faithfulness of the promiser.

When I think about promises, I realize there are really only three kinds we encounter:

• God’s promises

• Promises we make to ourselves

• Promises we make to others

God’s promises are absolute. They are rooted in His perfect character and therefore never fail.

Our promises to ourselves are hopeful, but limited. We intend to keep them, yet fall short.

Our promises to others are also sincere, but limited by our weakness and circumstances.

God’s promises are based on what He knows He will accomplish.

We make promises based on what we intend to accomplish.

Yet something beautiful happens when we truly believe God’s promises.

Faith begins changing us from the inside out.

Our desires begin to shift.

Those desires shape our daily choices.

Those choices slowly become our character.

He transforms us, and we begin to experience the life He intended for us—

a life filled with greater purpose, peace, and freedom.

That transformed life naturally overflows into the lives of those around us.

The promise doesn’t stop with us. It flows through us.

As I looked at one of my newest collections, I smiled.

Ironically, I had already titled the collection Modern Promise Paintings long before this study in Galatians.

It wasn’t until later that I noticed each painting held three distinct layers.

I love when God reveals the deeper meaning of a piece after it’s finished. Suddenly, I couldn’t unsee it.

The first layer reminds me of God’s promise—

freely given and rooted entirely in His faithfulness.

The second layer represents us, where faith in His promise transforms our

desires, thoughts, habits, and choices.

The third layer is the overflow to others—a life marked by the fruit of the Spirit, blessing those around us.

It’s what naturally flows when we remain connected to the One who made the original promise.

I’m excited to share 15 original paintings in this new collection I am now calling

“The Promise Flows”

My hope is that each piece serves as a reminder that God’s promises don’t simply secure our future—

they transform our present. As we trust Him, He reshapes our hearts, forms our character, reveals the life He intends for us,

and allows His love to overflow into the lives of others.

Because in the end…

The promise doesn’t rest on us.

It rests on the Promiser.
